Jessie jerked awake from a light doze as Nick’s voice sounded over the comms system in her helmet. She was surprised that she had finally relaxed enough to be able to sleep, and she straightened up in her seat, glancing around self-consciously.
“We’re coming up on Khavak. Everyone get ready.”
There was eager movement inside the M-ATV as everyone checked their weapons and settled down to await further orders. The vehicle slowed gradually, trundled along at a greatly reduced speed for a further ten minutes before it swung to the left, then stopped.
“Security teams, prepare to dismount. Report back to me with a sitrep as soon as you’ve checked out the area.”
Shrek, Mungo, Wolf and Devil, designated security teams one and two, each team accompanied by a single AA, quickly unstrapped themselves from their seats. They queued in a line, waiting to dismount and Jessie saw that they now appeared nervous, checking their helmets and weapons, their feet shifting around aimlessly, unable to keep still.
The pneumatic doors hissed open and they jumped down, each team disappearing around either side of the vehicle, one taking up position to observe the route they had just traversed, the other reconnoitering the area to the front.
The rest of Bravo Recon sat inside and waited in silence, fidgeting nervously until at last, Shrek’s voice came through their helmets, giving the all clear. Immediately, everyone released themselves from their seats and, one by one, they dismounted.
The first to jump down, Jessie was instantly alert, acutely aware of her surroundings and where the rest of the members of her section were in relation to herself. As soon as her boots touched the ground, she crouched slightly and glanced about.
The M-ATV, positioned at an angle across the narrow road that served as the main thoroughfare into the town, sealed off the route into the marketplace. The second M-ATV had carried out the same maneuver opposite, on the road leading out of the village. There was now no access to the area from either direction.
Jessie quickly studied the small, square marketplace in front of her. She was looking for anyone acting suspiciously or anything that looked out of place or out of the ordinary. She assumed that the dirty tan-colored building to her left was where the shura was due to take place. Directly opposite and to her right, beyond the jumble of market stalls, she spied some rundown buildings, their glassless windows looking down onto the townspeople as they went about their business.
She was relieved to note that the civilians of Khavak seemed to be going about their daily lives as if unaware of the arrival of the British army in their midst. If they were unafraid, then surely there could not be any insurgents in the area.
On rare occasions, the Taliban warned civilians of an impending attack, but there was always the chance that other insurgents turned a cold shoulder and had no sympathy for ordinary people caught in the crossfire. That meant there was no guarantee that because things looked normal within the town that they, in fact, were.
